My name is Kris Tovar, and I have the privilege of serving as the Director of Marketing for the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Coastal Bend. Today, I want to take a moment to share my story with you-a story that digs deep into my heart, one that has shaped my life, and one that illustrates just how vital our organization is for children in our community.

When I was just five years old, my life took a turn that I never could have imagined. My mother found herself alone, a single parent struggling to care for two young children with limited financial resources and no access to childcare. It was a time filled with uncertainty, fear, and countless worries about how we would make it day by day. 

In those moments of anxiety, I was brought to the Boys & Girls Club. Let me tell you, I was terrified. I was just a shy, chubby little introvert who didn't quite know how to fit in. I looked around at all these new faces and felt the weight of insecurity pressing down on me. Would I make friends? Would I be accepted? 

But what happened next was nothing short of miraculous. The Boys & Girls Club welcomed me with open arms, providing a nurturing environment that would change the course of my life forever. It became my safe haven, a space where I could let my guard down and simply be a kid. 

I remember one day vividly-a day that still brings a smile to my face. The Club announced a popcorn fundraiser where the top boy and girl would each win a bicycle. I had never owned a bike, and the thought of winning one ignited a spark within me. IAs I had being longing for a bike . I  was determined to do my best! 

With my mother's encouragement, I dove headfirst into that fundraiser. I set out to sell popcorn with a passion I didn't even know I had. I knocked on doors, chatted with neighbors, and poured my heart into every sale. I can still remember the thrill of each little victory, every dollar made; it felt like I was one step closer to that bike. 

And then came the day of the announcement. My heart raced as the names were called. When they announced my name as the winner, I was overcome with emotion. I stood there crying happy tears, feeling a rush of pride and disbelief. That bike-my first and only bike as a child-was a symbol of more than just a prize. It was a testament to hard work, determination, and the power of believing in myself. It represented a moment where I realized that I could achieve something great, even from challenging circumstances. 

The Boys & Girls Club didn't just stop at giving me a bike. It taught me essential life skills that have carried me through every facet of my life. I learned teamwork, communication, and the importance of helping others. I made lifelong friends, built confidence, and found mentors who genuinely cared about my well-being. They believed in me when I sometimes struggled to believe in myself. 

As I stand here today, I am profoundly aware that there are countless children in our community looking for the same support. The Boys & Girls Club plays a crucial role in their lives, providing a safe and nurturing environment. We offer homework help, mentoring, sports activities, and a place to call home after school. We help instill values of leadership, confidence, and respect, empowering our youth to believe in themselves and their potential. 

But to continue this vital work, we need your help. The sad truth is that many children in our community still face the same challenges I did. They need a safe space where they can learn, grow, and dream. Your support is not just about funding; it's about opening doors and creating opportunities. Every dollar you contribute goes directly to programs that change lives-programs that encourage kids to reach for the stars and believe they are worthy of a bright future. 

Imagine the impact we can make together. Picture a world where every child feels safe, valued, and inspired. A world where they can explore their passions and pursue their dreams. Together, we can make that world a reality. 

As I reflect on my journey, I am filled with gratitude for the Boys & Girls Club. It provided me with a foundation that has shaped my entire life. Now it's our turn to ensure that the next generation has the same opportunities to thrive.
